Priestly Orders

Below is the Priestly order of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Starting with Jesus Christ the Ultimate head of the Church throughout the ages.

And He [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Colossians 1:18

The ultimate head of the Church

Archbishop:

He is under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch and is accountable to the Holy Synod.

Current Patriarch:

Mor Ignatios Zakka I Iwas

122nd Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East.

He presides over the Holy Synod, the assembly of all bishops.

Priests: (Qasheesho)

Each church has a priest as its spiritual leader. He is under the direct jurisdiction of his archbishop and is directly accountable to him.

There are a couple of ranks of priests:

Very Reverend Father (chor-episcopos)

Deacons:

Deacons assist the priest in all aspects of service. They wear a white kutino and an uroro 'stole' in various shapes according to their rank.

Archdeacons (archedyaqno) is the highest ranking deacon. He wears the uroro round the neck. He also wear a zenoro and zende similar to priests.

Deacons (shamosho) he is allowed to distribute the holy quorbono. He wears the uroro over the left shoulder, on either side like wings.

Subdeacons (apodyaqno) wear the uroro folded around the neck.

Readers (qoruyo) wear the uroro in the form of a Cross

Singers (mzamrono) wear the kutino without the uroro
